From November 2025 DVSA is making some changes to the practical driving test, with the aim of enhancing road safety, addressing collision rates in rural areas and other high-speed roads, and aligning the test more closely with real-world driving conditions.

Learner drivers in Great Britain will now spend more time on higher speed, higher risk roads while on their driving test, where location allows. The changes aim to give learners more real-life experience by testing them on situations they are likely to face once they can drive independently. The changes will not affect the skills that learner drivers need to learn to prepare for their test.
Since 2017, and the deregulation of motorways, Learners at test readiness-standard have been allowed on motorways to train with their Approved Driving Instructor, allowing them to develop their skills and safety in this risky environment. This knowledge hub has been specifically designed to help Learners, parents and guardians and trainers in developing the right skills, knowledge and attitude to drive safely on high-speed roads.
